Just a thought, and I am blatantly stealing from LegendMUD:

What if a MUD/MMO launched with a contemporary world setting and a
viking age setting. You start in the contemporary world, and there
you can find a technology that allows you to travel back in time to
the viking age. You are however in the same landscape, except maybe
rivers have moved and soforth. So the landscape is both known, and
unknown. When you time travel you leave everything but your skills
behind. So basically you can provide two different type of game
plays. Maybe only the viking age allows PvP.

Advantages:

  1. You can provide multiple genres within one game without
requiring users that dislike one genre to play in that "era".

  2. Balancing issues in one era won't affect another era.

  3. You can add new games to the same world as expansions. For
  instance, a future era.

  4. You can let some eras be free and make others pay-to-play.

Not so novel, but it could be a good fit for a commercial MMO? I
particularly like the idea that one are in the same landscape, but
not in the same landscape. That you have knowledge about the world
you travel to, but that knowledge may, or may not be correct.

Examples of eras for Norway which could provide very different
experiences and different types of gameplay:

  1. The ice age.

  2. The viking age.

  3. The middle ages.

  4. National romantic era.

  5. The occupation, under Nazi control.

  6. Today

  7. Future: what if a racist party won the election?

  8. Future: oil disaster

  9. Distant future: cyborg city

  10. "Psychedelic": Norway seen through the eyes of Edvard Munch

Ola.
