Sorry to bother, but I was searching for other information (trying to
find out how showEQ works) and came across the archive for this mailing
list. In searching through it I came across your discussion of the
article

http://www.shirky.com/writings/quake.html

discussing the use of Quake as a groundwork for a 3-D environment.
There seemed to be discussion on the topic so I thought you might find
this interesting:

My partner and I performed such a modification to Quake II for the Win
environement, adding spanable worlds (in this case quake servers),
player to player messaging, chat, voice comm support, file exchange,
various systems to combine for better display of emotions, active
spaces, (enter museum, walk up to painting, select "tell me about it",
plays real audio, etc), 3rd person, emotion display, launch any content,
etc.

It wasn't released becuase it was more done as a demonstration of
feasablity research project, so the code we did was not superb or
secure. We had 2 - 3 months and had never coded anything big before
too, so it worked out to a big hack. Anyway, just wanted to write to
inform it is doable and is wicked cool.

The hope is to get refunded this summer, do it solidly in QIII, and
release it for people to toy with. If all goes as planned and we get
funded, will put up demo versions of the mod if that would be desired.

Sincerely,
~! Rudy Fink
