Please see Tim Berners-Lee's original definition of a URL, the
supporting BNF diagram, and other details as:

  URL:http://www.w3.org/Addressing/URL/Overview.html

and specifically section 1.1.1/Prefix.

Aside: The three mailers across two OS'es I use make all the formats
used and suggested clickable.  I'll leave the foibles and lack of
standards support of specific Windows products to others.
