I'm not sure from that article if they're talking about the same
research or not, but there was an interesting article in the last
issue of Science (or some major science publication--my roommates
are professors). The argument was basically that what game theorist
used to think of as altruism can more easily be explained as spite.

In any case, people don't behave the same in games as they do in
real life. While I think the methods used by experimental economists
and psychologists could be of great (and apparently overlooked) use
to game design, I don't think we should use the same assumptions
("people are rational" being one of them). For instance, I'm
something of a hoarder in-game, but the only way my room gets
cluttered is laziness, not a strange desire to keep useless stuff I
found 3 years ago.
