In fact, it wasn't a flaw initially. The main problem of Gates of
Discord is that it was initially designed with the view that
characters would raise to level 70. That's why the expansion was
initially so hard. Unfortunately, the gimmick got shuffled off to
the next expansion, Omens of War. Why? Don't know. Maybe the
marketing department said "we have a selling point for the
expansion, the raids, so we should save the level for the next
one". Who knows.

One of the most general complain I heard about the expansion isn't
the broken content or timesinks, or difficulty. It's "weirdness".
With names Pixxt Ixvet Pox, humanoid dogs straight out of a
Hellraiser movie, the invasion from another dimension story, people
were raising eyebrows. Where were the dragons? The big god avatars?
The normal fantasy environment? Suddendly, people were thrown out of
the AD&Desque Everquest straight into Asheron's Call.

For a lot of people, that's the biggest flaw of the expansion. You
simply don't relate to it.
