Mike, for an interesting "virtual world," I would read The Golden
Age by John C. Wright.

It's 10,000 years in the future, and everyone lives with very
realistic robotic mannequins that they can control, that feed back
their senses to their real bodies.  So, it's not "virtual" in the
traditional meaning, but it's very synthetic.  Moreover, every
individual can control how their senses are activated, one might
perceive "reality", while another perceives mystic symbols
surrounding people to indicate their emotions, and another sees
everyone represented as a photo slide-show of facial expressions
with hyperlinked text.  Good stuff.
