Actually, it is TV.  The US Army studies of Thompson and LaGuardia
in the 1920s, using suspended corpses show a deflection of less than
2" from a .45.  The "Deadly Weapons" video documentary shows a
gentleman in a hard ceramic flak vest taking a 7.62mm round from an
H&K G-3 at 3 ft.  He does not move.

The recoil of the weapon equals the impact of the bullet,
energywise.  If it doesn't knock down the shooter, it won't knock
down the target.
