If the novels are still under copyright, you'd need to get with
whoever currently owns the rights to them -- most likely the
author's heirs or someone appointed by the author's will to manage
his/her literary estate.

If they're no longer under copyright, then there's no need to
license them at all -- they're free game.

Yep.  From a legal point of view, whether or not you're making money
makes no difference.  From a practical point of view, people are
less likely to come after you if you're not making/charging money.
