Perhaps for speedwalking and the like, when the person first enters the
room the system should assume the character doesn't know anybody there, but
if the person does a "look" or whatever, *then* it does the lookup to see
if the other character is known.  That would be somewhat consistent with
reality anyway, since you don't always immediately recognize someone.
Perhaps a cache of people who are seen frequently would make it even more
realistic, since then you would immediately recognize anyone you see often,
but you would have to do a look command or whatever to recognize everyone
else you knew.
