Aren't you concerned this would undermine the mystique a bit?

Meaning, rather than getting a reaction along the lines of "Ooh, ahh, he's
a GOD! I'm averting my eyes, Oh Lord." from the other players, won't the
typical reaction be more like "Look at that! A god! What a moron."

Maybe it's just a matter of marketting though. You could describe it as
"The God Game", which costs $3k to join, and runs in the same gameworld as
the rest of the mud. But I think at $3k there would still be a "What a
moron" reaction from many of the mortals.

Maybe if you charged less to play the god game, started them out as
newbiegods, let them work their way up to the $3000 godhood level. All the
while, even as newbiegods, they could be doing some of the administrative
tasks you expect gods to do, playing their roles, building their followers
(or whatever it is that gods do in-character) - also investing time in
their character so that the churn rate for the higher-level gods wouldn't
be so high.

But then, that would be a whole 'nother game to design, implement and run
on top of the one you're already running (but with much fewer players and
all of them paying much more, maybe it'd be worthwhile).
