With a lightsaber, sure -- by "in the general case, though", I meant
"it works fine in these specific cases I just mentioned, but in
general..."

Lightsabers and monomolecular filament whips are both supposed to be
capable of doing things like chopping through limbs with nearly zero
force behind them.  Most weapons can't do that.  The sort of ways in
which someone trying to use a weapon on someone else might hit
themselves are such that you're not likely to hit yourself with much
force, if you mess up so very badly that you hit yourself at all.
