I think that the most "influential" ones were not necessarily the ones that
had the most innovations, but the ones that addicted the most players and
caused them to go off and write their own muds in a similar vein. :)

In that respect MUME is important, because it spawned (as far as I know)
the whole "darkie vs. whitie" style of play.  Mortal Conquest and that whole
series of Owen-derived muds were all based very heavily on MUME (not
surprising, as I believe Owen used to be an immortal there).  That series
enjoyed an immense popularity for a small (less than a year, I'd say)
period of time, to the point that other muds' playerbases actually noticably
decreased due to migrations to Mortal Conquest et al.
